Kaboom Goes Boom In Los Angeles
Commercial/short film/interactive production house kaboom productions, headquartered in San Francisco, has extended its geographic and artistic reach, launching Boom, a Los Angeles shop specializing in music videos and music-driven branded projects.
Director Brandon Dickerson, who continues to be handled for spots via kaboom, becomes the centerpiece talent and Boom, shifting his music video representation to the new venture; his most recent clips roost had been bicoastal Merge@Crossroads.
The formations of Boom is in line with kaboom's philosophy of being a content-driven company. "Whatever the medium and the format--be it 30-second spots, Web and interactive work, short films and now music videos--our directors create visual, branded material," said Lauren Schwartz, owner/executive producer of kaboom and Boom.
She noted that Boom should also help further facilitate production of varied content in Southern California. Kaboom has shot in assorted locales, including extensively in both the Southland and Northern California.
The Los Angeles foothold will also supprot the multi-disciplinary nature of its directing talent. Dickerson, for example, has been active in spots and videos; in the latter discipline he has helmed clips for Sixpence None The Richer, Dishwalla, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Vince Gill and Switchfoot.
Of Kaboom's opening Boom, Dicerson said, "I love having commercials, music videos, documentaries and even photography under one roof. The lines are getting blurred. Whereas a music video can be viewed as a commercial for an album, they [music clips] are also pushing artistic boundaries. Commercials in a TiVo world are willing to engage artistically like never before. Car companies are funding documentaries.
"It makes sense for me to have all imagery I direct under one roof and the Boom/kaboom partnership makes a lot of sense."
Once Boom is firmly established with Dickerson, the shop will seek out other directors, including perhaps several of those at kaboom. The directorial roster at kaboom includes Dickerson, the Sausage team (John Benson and Ward Evans), Doug Werby, Gary Shaffer, and Danny Weisberg. Plans call for Schwartz and head of production Eric McCasline to spend time in both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Under the kaboom banner, Sausage recently diversified beyond spot-making, wrapping a four-day, green screen shoot of an actress, Janina Gavankar, playing the part of Ms. Dewey, the Internet librarian protagonist of a new search engine (www.msdewey.com). Sausage's Ms. Dewey footage has been integrated by San Francisco agency EVB into the search engine. The Sausage directors earlier helmed Gavankar in the music video "Float Away" for their indie rock band Recliner. Gavankar has since been cast in the Showtime series The L Word.
